What is Punta Gorda like for a student group?

Punta Gorda is not a resort town and it does not pretend to be. It is where Toledo District does its business — a market, a bus stop, a hospital, a few thousand people, and the sea at the end of the street.

For a group leader the practical points are these. The town is small and walkable, so students are not being ferried about. The compound is gated and we host one group at a time, so at night your people are behind one gate in one place and you know where everybody is. That is a genuinely different proposition from a group scattered across a hotel with other guests.

The hospital and the University of Belize Toledo campus are both a three-minute walk, which matters more than it sounds — for clinical groups, for anything that goes wrong, and for peace of mind.

It is a diverse town. Maya, Garifuna, Creole, East Indian, Mestizo and Chinese communities all live in Toledo, and for a lot of student groups the town itself turns out to be the part of the trip they talk about afterwards, more than the caves and the ruins.

What to prepare your students for: it is hot and humid, it rains hard, the pace is unhurried, and the internet is not what they are used to. Groups that arrive expecting that have a good week. Groups that arrive expecting Placencia do not.
